Cheers Star George Wendt Dies at 76

George Wendt, of Cheers fame, dies at 76. His family said he died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday morning. Wendt, known for his warmth, humor and kindness, was remembered as a loving family man and beloved friend.


Wendt appeared in all 275 episodes of Cheers, which ran on NBC from 1982 to 1993. His lovable, wisecracking bar fly became a fan favorite, his entrance and the bar's thunderous "Norm!" greeting becoming a slogan of the show. His work on the show nabbed him six straight Emmy nods for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.

A Legacy on TV and in Film

Apart from Cheers, Wendt also appeared in a few movies such as Dreamscape, Forever Young, and Gung Ho. He also had a part in Michael Jackson's 1991 music video Black or White, playing Macaulay Culkin's father.

Wendt made a cameo appearance at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2024 alongside some of his former Cheers co-stars such as Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer and John Ratzenberger.

Apart from their 1978 marriage to his late wife, fellow actor Bernadette Birkett, Wendt has been married ever since. The pair had three children. He was also the uncle of actor and comedian Jason Sudeikis of Ted Lasso fame.

Condolences Tributes to Pour In for a TV Legend
Tributes from the entertainment world have poured in. Ted Danson expressed a deep sense of loss when he said, "This is going to take me a long time to get used to. I love you, Georgie." The bar that served as the inspiration for Cheers, Cheers Boston, paid tribute by posting a photo of Wendt's character's bar stool, which read, "You'll always have a stool at our bar."

Actress Melissa Joan Hart, who appeared with Wendt on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, shared her memories, describing him as a "warm, professional, and kind" man. Heaven just got a little funnier!" she added.
