GDP per Capita Comparison in the EU

Luxembourg continues to lead the EU with the highest GDP per capita, standing at an impressive 126,900 euros. This high figure is largely attributed to the large number of financial institutions based in the country and the influx of workers who commute to Luxembourg but do not reside there. Ireland follows in second place with 99,100 euros, boosted by the presence of many multinational companies. Denmark ranks third with 66,400 euros, while the Netherlands maintains its position in fourth.

On the opposite end of the scale, Bulgaria has the lowest GDP per capita in the EU, at 16,100 euros.

GDP Per Capita Growth in the Netherlands

After adjusting for price changes, the Netherlands' GDP per capita saw a slight increase of 0.3 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year. This growth reflects a larger increase in the country's GDP than in its population, contributing to an overall rise in prosperity. Across the EU, the average GDP per capita increased by 0.8 percent.

Actual Individual Consumption: A Measure of Prosperity

Another key indicator of material prosperity is actual individual consumption per inhabitant, which accounts for household spending as well as government and non-profit sector consumption. In the Netherlands, this figure stood at 32,000 euros in 2024, securing second place in the EU, following Luxembourg. The EU average for actual individual consumption was over 26,000 euros.

Conclusion

The Netherlands' continued high ranking in both GDP per capita and individual consumption reflects the nation's solid economic standing in the European Union, with significant prosperity and growth outpacing the EU average.
