The incident led to a large-scale emergency response operation. Fortunately, all employees inside the facility managed to escape without injury.
The Rotterdam-Rijnmond Safety Region confirmed that no one was hurt during the incident.
The fire was officially brought under control around 11 a.m. after several hours of firefighting efforts.
Emergency Teams Act Quickly
The first reports about the fire came just before 7 a.m. Due to the size and intensity, it was quickly escalated to a huge fire, which allowed emergency teams to deploy extra firefighters, vehicles, and specialized support.
Fireboats from the Port of Rotterdam Authority were also used, pumping huge amounts of water from the Maas River to assist the teams on site.
Smoke Impact and Safety Measures
Officials explained that the fire was challenging to control because of the large volume of waste inside the building. This increased the risk of the fire restarting or smoldering even after the main flames were put out.
Thick smoke was seen during the early stages of the fire, but it was reduced by around 8:15 a.m.
Despite improvements, smoke stayed low in the nearby Heijplaat neighborhood, raising concerns about air quality and smell. The fire department continued to monitor the area to check for any hazardous substances in the air.
