The move comes after growing concerns about environmental cleanliness and public health. Garbage bags left on the streets often get torn open by animals like rats and gulls, or even people searching for recyclable items, creating litter and pollution.
Implementation of the New Waste Collection Rules
Although the rules officially come into effect on July 1, companies have a transitional period until then. From that point forward, businesses that fail to follow the new rules risk facing fines starting at 550 euros. Additionally, businesses that dump waste into containers intended for residents will also be penalized.
To assist with enforcement, businesses have been required to place a sticker with their address on their waste bags since last year. However, businesses producing fewer than nine garbage bags a week can still dispose of their waste using regular garbage bags as long as they pay the appropriate waste collection charges.
Future Waste Disposal Changes for Individuals
While businesses are the primary focus for now, private individuals are still allowed to leave their garbage bags on the street. However, the deputy mayor has stated that this practice will eventually be phased out as well.
This move aims to improve the overall cleanliness of Amsterdam and reduce the city's pollution levels.
