Rain and Chill May Greet Sinterklaas Parade on Texel

This Saturday, the weather for Sinterklaas's eagerly anticipated national arrival on Texel is still uncertain. An expected temperature of 5 to 10 degrees Celsius on the Wadden Island, forecasters say, we're still unsure which area in the Netherlands might be getting rain.

More Uncertainty for Parade Day
Meteorologists are still weighing in on which parts of the Netherlands will receive rain this weekend. Some estimates have the northern parts (including Texel) getting rain during Sinterklaas's arrival, but others estimate that the more southern parts of the Netherlands will get most of the precipitation instead. There is an overall 60 percent probability of rain on Saturday, which is also when many local Sinterklaas parades are happening.

While it is likely to stay cooler on Texel, slightly higher maximum temperatures are expected in the southern Netherlands (8 to 15 degrees Celsius). Towards Sunday, the chance of rain decreases to around 40 percent — some hope to have sun in between the festivities as well.

Chilly Weather and Uncertainty about Falling Droplets
The meteorologist's biggest challenge is locating the boundary between warm, moist air blowing in from the south and colder, drier air coming from the north, or the 'frontal zone'. As the name suggests, the 'frontal zone' is where the rain will fall. A small shift in the location of the boundary can be the difference between a dry or wet Sinterklaas event in Texel.

Even if the temperature is in the range of 5 to 10 degrees Celsius, the effect of cold winds plus the open sea conditions means it will feel significantly colder for the expected crowds attending the festivities. People attending the festivities will want to layer up and prepare for possible rain upon Sinterklaas's return.
