42-Year-Old Polish Man Drowns in Limburg Lake Near Weert

A 42-year-old man from Poland drowned on Saturday afternoon while swimming in the Blauwe Meertje, a recreational lake near the Limburg village of Weert. The drowning is a tragic accident, and no foul play is suspected, the police said.

Apparently, around 3:30 p.m., the man went underwater and never resurfaced, the police said. A police spokesman said he had been swimming beyond the designated beach area, in an area farther out from where most swimmers typically stay.

Rescue Attempts Unsuccessful
The man's friends yanked him out of the water and attempted to revive him. Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward and began doing lifesaving work. Sadly, they could not resuscitate him.
The man's name has not been released, but he was a Polish national, authorities said. The police were treating the event as a fatal accident and said they had found no indication of foul play.
