Carla Muters,Chair of NHG's board of directors commented over 20% of survey respondentswere concerned about their financial situation. It causes stress, and feelings of helplessness, and even sleepless nights for many in this camp. We also see that one in three is saying: I can just about meet my expenses. That covers housing and the rest of the bills," Muters said.
While mortgage delinquencies remain low by historical standards, more people are using their vacation pay for basics, such as home maintenance, according to the survey. This is the third poll NHG has done on this issue, and fears about housing costs have inched up since the last one in October.
Low-Cost Lending Put to the Test
NHG is urgently urging those who have taken out mortgages between 2015 and 2021 to be careful. These people took advantage of the historically low interest rates — some under 1%. But interest rates have been rising since 2022 — and now average around 3.5%.
Although rising rates are not yet a grave concern for most people who responded to the survey, they are, or will soon be, on the horizon for many whose fixed-rate periods are set to expire. "Depending on the term, they may expire now or in the next few years and then you'd be looking at higher mortgage interest," Muters said. "How much more you'll pay will depend on your individual mortgage and personal circumstances, but it could be tens of euros or a lot more each month."
Appeal for Economic Education and Assistance
Muters advises homeowners to focus on their own financial positions. "Talk about it, get insight. A lot of people don't understand their mortgage terms or financial standing," she said.
Average incomes are growing at a faster pace than expenditures, according to a recent study from the Central Planning Bureau. But NHG notes that this is not the case for everyone. "Some people are already cutting back spending on fun things, or groceries, or working more to deal with (it)," Muters said.
NHG is also concerned with the increase in households that are financially stretched. More people are showing up for professional care, but many still are not. NHG provides support through agents and lenders like budget or job coaching. "Let us know if you need help," Muters pointed out.
