The ban on advertising applies to climate-damaging promotional appeals, for example, ads for air travel, cruises and gas contracts. The council also voted for a motion from the PvdD to investigate the possibility of extending the ban to cover advertisements for non-organic meat, fish, dairy and eggs.
A Piece of Global Warming Action
City council member from the PvdD, Eline Lauret, stressed the importance of the move for environmental reasons. "In Nijmegen, we work on climate change, and climate-damaging advertising is a part of it," she told the Dutch news outlet De Volkskrant in a statement.
Nijmegen is joining other Dutch cities in that effort. The Hague was the first municipality to outlaw fossil fuel ads in the country, last year. That ruling has just been affirmed by a court. It have recently been followed by bans in Utrecht and Delft.
Ban to Take Effect in Autumn
In order to enforce the new policy Nijmegen will be making changes to its general local regulations. The alterations are expected to come in the autumn. The city is hoping this action could have wider reaching ramifications and help change the culture of living more sustainably and lessen the power environmentally damaging adverts hold over consumers.
