An entire sheet is devoted to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, including the comically grisly duel with the Black Knight, who carps, "It's only a scratch!" Yes, even after all his limbs were lost. The second sheet features Monty Python members John Cleese as a yelling Gumby, Michael Palin in drag and Terry Gilliam with a stoat through his head.
Classic Sketches and Absurd Icons
The stamps are also a tribute to memorable TV scenes from Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969-1974). Fans will notice references to classic sketches, including the Fish Slapping Dance, the "nudge nudge" routine, and naturally, Spam itself — the sketch that gave a name to unsolicited electronic mail.
True to vintage Monty Python, the stamps sport pastiche designs and hectic collages akin to the surrealistic whimsy that has always been synonymous with the comedy troupe. In announcing the set, Royal Mail stated that Monty Python has long "loomed like a gigantic animated foot over the British comedy landscape," about the program's iconic opening animation of a stomping foot crushing down on every episode(does anyone remember that?)
Legacy and Stamp Release Details
Between 1969 and 1983, Monty Python made four TV series (and three movies) and eventually a few reunions. Graham Chapman and Terry Jones, ultimately lost to the grave, have established their comedic heritage forthwithwise these tributes as well as maintaining their place in our cultural mythologies.
The stamps are available for pre-order now and will be released Aug. 14. As it has occasionally done in the past, Royal Mail is commemorating icons of pop music with special stamps suitable for posting, but which are either kept as a collector's item or used to mail something.
