Thousands of birds culled and restrictions applied
A total of about 71,000 birds were culled at the infected farm site to stop the disease from spreading. The area contains six other poultry farms that are within a three-kilometre distance from the outbreak, and the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is monitoring them. To limit the course of the outbreak, preemptive transport bans have been imposed on 25 farms that are within a ten-kilometre distance from the outbreak. The transport ban prevents the farms listed from moving animals, eggs, litter and/or manure from the location.....
Farmers have also been instructed to house their birds indoors for those within the transport limit, while hobby farmers want to have their birds screened. These are measures taken to lessen the chances of the virus entering the farm from contact with wild birds....
More outbreaks and vaccination trials
Up until 2021, bird flu cases in the Netherlands were mostly limited to winter only, but have quickly changed in the past few years. The outbreaks now occur frequently and are year-round. Bird flu can be deadly for birds, while human infection is rare but usually occurs through close contact with infected animals. The flu is not considered dangerous to humans.
Due to the repeated outbreaks, the Netherlands has begun testing the immunization of birds. The vaccination aims to protect birds from avian flu, as well as examine how immunization can affect them.
