Mary Berry at 90: The One Food She Avoids to Stay Healthy

Dame Mary Berry has shared the secret to maintaining her health and vitality into her 90s — and it all comes down to one simple decision: staying away from processed food.

A Love of All Things Natural and Fresh
During an appearance on the Lessons From Our Mothers podcast, Mary insisted she likes food made of 'simple, whole and natural things'. "I avoid processed foods. Definitely definitely," she said with an enthusiasm that revealed her passion for shopping farm shops and butchers. "If you go to a butchers, you'd be advised as well as supplied with good meat," she said.

Berry, 91, the doyenne of British baking who has written over 75 cookbooks in a career of more than 50 years, says that eating fresh fruit and vegetables is what keeps her active and engaged, even in her 90s. Even with her love of greens she confessed she was no fan of trendy superfoods like kale. "I'm not a big fan of kale. "That I used to give my pony," she joked, and continued, "I love cabbage. I'll tell people about that, or watercress and all of those kind of things."

 

Sound health and staying connected
During a recent public appearance at the Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards in London, Berry spoke openly about her troubles with her reported hearing loss to The Sun. YOU people!!!" Gesturing for quiet from the audience, she said, "I'm deaf and there might be one or two other people who find it difficult to hear everything."

 

Although she's hard of hearing and once was stricken with a case of mild polio as a teenager, Berry still works regularly. Her strength and happiness in life is an inspiration to all who hear about her.
