Severe Crash Caused Structural Damage
The man was behind the wheel of a black Volkswagen when he drove into the front of a house, partially inside the dwelling, causing major structural damage. Bricks were lying over the hood and roof of the car. The trauma helicopter team was alerted, and the trauma doctor treated the still-unconscious driver before being taken to the hospital in an ambulance. However, he died despite the efforts of medics.
The vehicle contained a canister of laughing gas. The driver submitted to a blood draw for toxicology testing, but police have not released the results, citing the victim's privacy.
House Residents Safe but Displaced
Happily, the people in the home remained uninjured. But they were not allowed to go back in, apparently because of concerns that the building would fall. One neighbour told the family that they had just finished remodelling their home before the crash.
There have been serious road accidents on Gemertseweg before. The same road saw a bus driven by an 79-year-old driver from Someren lose control due to a medical situation in the following year, crashing into yet another home. However, about 25 passengers with it should have been more serious, though they escaped injuries or death.
