Union Calling for Better Pay and Conditions
The Dutch railway company NS was charged by the union with a failure to make progress on pay and working conditions. They also underlined that, after a large strike on Friday crippled the Utrecht area, an important connection in the rail network, NS hadn’t taken sufficient action. Hence, the union has declared to call the strike again.
Wim Eilert, a union official, pleaded with travelers for their understanding and called on NS to come up with a fair and serious offer.
The walkout also includes conductors as well as office and station staff. Still more strikes are expected in the weeks ahead.
Pay offer and Strike impact
NS is offering a 2.55% increase in annual wages, but the union feels this is not enough. They’re seeking a bigger raise to keep pace with inflation, better conditions for workers with non-standard shifts, and an earlier retirement date for physically demanding jobs.
Regional services operated by other companies such as Arriva and international services will be unaffected by the strike.
