More than half of people who responded to the survey said they do not feel well-protected online. They also spoke of existing social media platforms not doing enough to protect them. The results suggest that young people want better online protections. In a statement, UNICEF Nederland, responding to the data, said it was a clear signal from kids and teenagers in the country for stricter measures, including restricting endless scrolling and more age-appropriate protections.
Contrary Beliefs and Parental Views
The age ban has won majority favor, but there are 31 never ban respondents. Their reasons range from a belief that social media use is a matter of personal choice to questions about whether such restrictions would work — or be enforceable. The research also points to correlating findings among parents with seven in 10 in favor of banning apps such as Instagram and TikTok for children under 16. But 80 per cent of mums and dads think WhatsApp should remain available to younger children.
Survey responses were weighted based on population estimates for age, gender, region and household social class. Further discussion will be held in the Dutch parliament.
