27 Hospitalized, 2 Critically Hurt
The shooting occurred at about 7:00 p.m. (Dutch time) as hundreds of thousands were gathered in the city for a celebration parade of a championship. A 53-year-old man, believed to be a white British participant from Liverpool, was arrested at the scene.
According to police:
27 were hospitalized
4 of the wounded were young children
Two other people, one of them a child, were seriously injured
20 others were treated at the scene and not hospitalized
It took authorities several hours to issue the number of wounded. They also insisted that the incident was being investigated as a Collision, not as an act of terrorism. The public has also been called on to refrain from speculating on motives or circulating misinformation.
PM, Club, and Players Respond
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the scene as "horrific" and sympathized with victims. "(My) wholehearted condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims," he wrote on X, also expressing gratitude to emergency services for their quick intervention.
It happened at an official victory parade, where Liverpool FC players were taken on an open-top bus tour of the city to celebrate the league title win. The title had been clinched weeks before, but the parade took place only after the season was done.
Liverpool FC said in a statement:
"Our hearts are with all who have been affected by this most serious incident. We will maintain taking instructions from the emergency services and the local authorities."
Among those at the party were manager Arne Slot and Dutch stars Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo.
