Half of Dutch Population Volunteers, Sports Clubs Lead

In the Netherlands, half of people aged 15 and older engage in volunteer work, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Sports clubs are the most common place for volunteering, while political organizations and refugee agencies receive the least help.

The CBS study also reveals that volunteering is more common in rural areas. In non-urban areas, 59 percent of respondents said they volunteered, compared to 44 percent in urban areas. The volunteer rate has remained steady over the years, with a significant dip during the pandemic. Since then, volunteer numbers have returned to previous levels, although some organizations struggle to find volunteers, especially for board positions.

Sports clubs see the highest number of volunteers, with 20 percent of those in villages involved, while only 12 percent of city dwellers volunteer in sports clubs. Political groups and refugee agencies receive far fewer volunteers, with only about two percent each. Volunteering for social services like food banks has grown, increasing from under two percent in 2012 to almost four percent in 2024.

People aged 25 to 35 and those over 75 tend to volunteer less often than others, with 43 and 46 percent volunteering, respectively. People with higher vocational or university education tend to volunteer more, at a rate of 57 percent.
